Where to base yourself in Koh Phangan
Stay in Haad Rin if the Full Moon Party is the reason you are coming, and in Thong Sala or Ban Tai for a calmer, cheaper base close to the pier, the night market and the rest of the island. The west coast, from Srithanu to Haad Yao and Secret Beach, is quieter, with the best sunsets and the island's yoga and nomad scene.
If you want a private bungalow or a beach resort, our guide to where to stay in Koh Phangan covers each area in more detail, with places for every budget.
Getting to and around Koh Phangan
There is no airport on Koh Phangan. Most travellers fly to Koh Samui and take a ferry or speedboat to Thong Sala, or travel from Surat Thani or Bangkok on a combined bus and boat ticket.
Songthaews and taxis meet the boats at Thong Sala and run to Haad Rin and the other beaches. Scooters are cheap to rent, but the roads are steep and accidents are common, so only ride if you are experienced and your insurance covers it.
