Koh Phangan is many islands in one. It is famous for the Full Moon Party in Haad Rin, but it is also one of the best places in Thailand for yoga and wellness, home to a big community of digital nomads on the west coast, and ringed with quiet, beautiful bays in the north. Where you stay decides which of those you get.

Below we explain the best areas to stay in Koh Phangan and who each one suits, followed by the six places we would book first across every budget, from beachside huts near Srithanu to a four-star resort on Thong Nai Pan Noi. The picks are based on location, facilities and Booking.com reviews.

The best areas to stay in Koh Phangan

Koh Phangan is bigger than it looks, and the roads are steep and winding, so choosing the right area matters. These are the six we would look at first.

Thong Sala
Best for first-timers and getting around
The island's main town and ferry pier on the west coast, with the night market, the Saturday walking street, supermarkets, banks and plenty of cafes. It is not the prettiest part of Koh Phangan, but everything is easy here, and the beaches of Ban Tai are a few minutes away.
Srithanu
Best for yoga, wellness and digital nomads
A laid-back village on the west coast that has become the island's yoga and wellness hub, with retreat centres, healthy cafes, coworking spaces and Zen Beach for sunsets. It suits longer stays, and it is quiet at night compared with the south.
Haad Rin
Best for the Full Moon Party
The peninsula in the south-east where the Full Moon Party takes over Haad Rin Nok, the sunrise beach, every month. It is loud and busy, especially around the full moon, while Haad Rin Nai on the other side is calmer with sunset views. Book early for party dates.
Ban Tai and Ban Kai
Best for value and beach bungalows
The south coast between Thong Sala and Haad Rin, with long, shallow beaches, good-value bungalows and resorts, and some of the island's jungle and pre-party nights. It is a good middle ground, close to the pier and a short drive from Haad Rin.
Thong Nai Pan
Best for beautiful beaches and couples
Two sheltered bays in the north-east, Thong Nai Pan Noi and Thong Nai Pan Yai, with soft sand, clear water and some of the island's best resorts. It is about 30 to 40 minutes from Thong Sala by car on a winding road, so it suits people who want to stay put and relax.
Chaloklum and the north
Best for a quiet, local stay
A fishing village in the north with seafood restaurants, dive shops and calm beaches nearby, including Malibu Beach and Bottle Beach. It is far from the party scene and a good choice for a slow, local week.

Getting to and around Koh Phangan

Koh Phangan has no airport. The quickest way is to fly to Koh Samui and take a ferry or speedboat to Thong Sala, which takes 30 minutes to an hour. Cheaper options are flying to Surat Thani and taking a bus and ferry, or a combined bus and boat ticket from Bangkok.

Songthaews (shared pick-up taxis) and taxis meet the boats at Thong Sala and run to most beaches, and you can book rides through apps. Many visitors rent a scooter, but the roads are steep, winding and sometimes unpaved, so only ride if you are experienced and make sure your insurance covers it.

FAQ: where to stay in Koh Phangan

It depends on why you are going. Haad Rin for the Full Moon Party, Srithanu for yoga, wellness and a nomad community, Thong Nai Pan for beautiful beaches, and Thong Sala or Ban Tai if you want convenience and good value close to the pier.

In Haad Rin, so you can walk home. Palita Lodge is right on the party beach, and Explorar is on the calmer Haad Rin Nai side. Book well ahead, as prices rise sharply and many places have minimum stays around the full moon.

Srithanu and the west coast have the most coworking spaces, healthy cafes and long-stay nomads, and Thong Sala is close by with everything you need. See our list of cafes and coworking spaces on Koh Phangan, and our guide to the best hostels in Koh Phangan for budget options.

There is no airport on the island. Most people fly to Koh Samui and take a ferry or speedboat to Thong Sala, which takes 30 minutes to an hour, or fly to Surat Thani and take a bus and ferry. Combined bus and boat tickets also run from Bangkok.

January to April is dry and sunny, and July and August are usually good too. October to December is the wettest time on this side of Thailand, with November the rainiest month. Check the full moon dates, as Haad Rin fills up and prices rise around the party.
