Hoi An is one of the most charming towns in Vietnam, with a lantern-lit Old Town listed by UNESCO, tailors and street food on every corner, rice paddies on the edge of town and a long, sandy beach a short bike ride away. It is also easy on the wallet, with excellent homestays and boutique hotels at every price.

Below we explain the best areas to stay in Hoi An and who each one suits, followed by the six places we would book first across every budget, from a family-run villa near the Old Town to a five-star spa hotel. The picks are based on location, facilities and Booking.com reviews.

The best areas to stay in Hoi An

Hoi An is small, and most visitors stay within a bike ride of the Old Town. These are the six areas we would look at first.

Old Town
Best for first-timers and sightseeing
The UNESCO-listed Ancient Town, with its yellow merchant houses, assembly halls, the Japanese Covered Bridge and lanterns along the Thu Bon River. Staying here or on its edge means you can walk everywhere and see the town early in the morning and at night, when the day-trippers have gone. Rooms cost a little more, and the riverside can flood in October and November.
Cam Pho and Minh An
Best for value near the sights
The streets just west and north of the Old Town, along Hai Ba Trung and Nguyen Phuc Tan, are full of homestays, villas and small hotels with pools. You are a 5 to 15 minute walk or a short bike ride from the lanterns, and prices are noticeably lower than in the Old Town itself.
An Hoi
Best for the Night Market and river views
The small island across the river from the Old Town, linked by footbridges, is home to the Night Market and plenty of riverside bars and restaurants. It is lively in the evening and gives you views back over the Old Town, but it can be busy and noisy until late.
Cam Thanh
Best for rice paddies and peace
A green, rural area between the town and the coast, with rice paddies, the coconut palm forest where the basket-boat tours run, and quiet villas with pools. You will need a bike or a short taxi ride to get anywhere, but it is the place to slow down.
An Bang Beach
Best for the beach and digital nomads
About 5 kilometres from the Old Town, An Bang is Hoi An's favourite beach, with beach bars, seafood restaurants, laptop-friendly cafes and a relaxed, international crowd. It is easy to cycle into town, and many long-stay nomads base themselves here.
Cua Dai and Cam Chau
Best for resorts and spa hotels
The road from the Old Town to Cua Dai Beach is lined with larger hotels and resorts with spas and pools, many with free shuttles into town. It suits travellers who want comfort and space more than street life on the doorstep.
