The best areas to stay in Medellín
Most visitors stay in El Poblado or Laureles, with Envigado a quieter alternative. These are the six areas we would look at first.
El Poblado
Best for first-timers and nightlifeMedellín's best-known neighbourhood, in the green hills of the south-east, with the bars and restaurants of Provenza and Parque Lleras, boutique hotels and plenty of laptop-friendly cafes. It is the easiest place to start and has the widest choice of places to stay, but it is also the most expensive and touristy part of the city, and the area around Parque Lleras is noisy late at night.
Laureles-Estadio
Best for living like a localA flat, leafy, middle-class area west of the river, with tree-lined streets, the Primer and Segundo Parque de Laureles and the bars and food of La 70 and La 33. It feels more local and is cheaper than El Poblado, and the Estadio and Floresta metro stations make it easy to get around.
Manila
Best for a lively base on a budgetA compact, walkable pocket at the bottom of El Poblado, with hostels, street art, small cafes and independent restaurants. It is close to Parque El Poblado and the metro, and a little calmer and better value than the streets around Parque Lleras.
Envigado
Best for a quieter, local stayA separate town just south of El Poblado that has grown into Medellín, with a busy main square, good local restaurants and a relaxed, residential feel. It is popular with long-stay nomads who want lower prices and a calmer pace, and the metro and taxis make El Poblado a short trip away.
Belén
Best for longer stays and valueA large, residential district south of Laureles, close to the Olaya Herrera domestic airport and the Cerro Nutibara viewpoint. There are few hotels, but it has good-value apartments, markets and everyday local life, which suits people staying a month or more.
El Centro
Best for sights, by dayThe old centre is where you will find Plaza Botero, the Museo de Antioquia and the Palacio de la Cultura, and it is easy to reach on the metro. It is busy and interesting by day but can feel unsafe after dark, so we suggest visiting rather than staying here.

Getting to and around Medellín
Most international flights land at José María Córdova International Airport in Rionegro, in the hills about 45 minutes to an hour from El Poblado by taxi or app. Some domestic flights use Olaya Herrera airport, which is inside the city, close to Laureles and Belén.
The Metro de Medellín is clean, cheap and easy to use, with Line A running north to south through the city and stations close to El Poblado, Laureles and Envigado. The Metrocable cable cars climb into the hills, including up to Parque Arví, and ride-hailing apps are cheap and the easiest way to get around at night.
